Roads are washed out and homes are damaged again in parts of Pike County. The water was so powerful, it tore one road to pieces, and destroyed water lines in the Dorton area. Emergency officials are afraid this will not be the end of the damage.
Courtney Smallwood was inside her home when mud, water, and rocks slammed into her home. She says, "I felt a big gush, it was like something hard hit the house, and I looked out and it was water running everywhere. It washed everything out. I don't know what happened."
Smallwood is now stacking rocks along the swift moving creek, trying to reroute the water around her home, something she did just a few days ago. "We had cleaned up from something that happened on May the 28th, we had all the yard cleaned up and had started actually a new creek yesterday. It doesn't even look like it's been touched. We had a back hoe up here and it doesn't even look like we touched it, we worked so hard in it."
Mud is pushing against the home and the family fears it is unstable. Smallwood says, "Once you crawl under there, really there is some blocks that are kind of laid over, I don't even know how it's still standing, but I don't want to go in there."
At the end of this broken road is another home destroyed by the rushing water. John Cable Hollow looks like a river is passing through it, and the power of the water washed away more than the road.
Emergency Management Director Doug Tackett says, "Water lines are now washed away, so the folks that are up there are still stranded at the moment. Road crews are working to get them access in and out."
So far, the only major damage from the latest storms in Pike County is around Dorton, but Tackett fears this is not the end. He says, "The clean up continues and the damage seems to mount as well."
Tackett says for now, the waters are receding. Water is available at the Dorton Fire Department for families who lost water. Doug Tackett says the roadway needs to be repaired before water lines will be back in place.

If any of you have ever been on a mine site, you would know that all the rock drains, and ponds slow the flow of water down. This area got alot of rain in s every short time span. I live fairly close to this area and saw all kinds of trash, trees, and other junk going down elkhorn creek. When the main creek Or river is that high, the feeder streams back up. I hate anyone got flooded out but its just nature. Maybe a pond burst in cable hollow, or it could have been an old deep mine that blew out. Still all that rain is what caused the flooding.
Why when every time there is a flood, they blame the mining industry? I live in an area where ther hasn't been any mining and my house got flooded. Do you think that it may have something to do on where we live? 4 to 6 inches of rain within a short time is a lot of water. We live here in the beautiful mountains of Eastern Ky. Strip mining may have some part of it, but not all of it. We live in the valleys next to the creeks and rivers where the land is "flat". What if we lived on top of the mountians? Would be have to worry about the flooding again? NO we wouldn't, so quit the blame game and help others that may need your help in this time of need. What if....we had a 4-6' snow (an inch of rain equals 1' of snow, roughly) who would you blame then? The mining industry for producing coal and Green House gases? has anyone ever thought that this could be the work of God? He maybe testing us to see if we will help each other to become stronger.
those [junk cars] kept some of the water off of peoples homes.all of you people who are taking up for mining.if you would have seen what happened maybe it would change your simple minds.if it had been your home you would have questions also.kick people people when they are down, what a man you are!!!!!!!!!!
