An Eastern Kentucky man says car insurance rates are getting too high. As a result, he's pushing for the government to intervene. He's even taking his campaign all the way to the White House.
Hitting the road can be expensive.
"They just keep jacking the price up on it," said Billy Greer.
Greer says he's been paying over two thousand dollars a year for car insurance.
Just last month, his insurance provider started charging him four hundred dollars more.
"I can't afford this. I don't make enough money to pay this. Half the people in Martin County don't have the money. They cannot pay their insurance," Greer said.
On the flip-side, we spoke with many insurance agencies who say their rate isn't increasing. An agent from Farm Bureau even says they've had a flat rate for the past two years.
But Greer says it's still troubling that so many people can't afford car insurance.
So he's making a move to get government involved.
"It's time for the government to step in and stop it," Greer said.
Greer has contacted Governor Fletcher, state representatives, and has nearly one thousand signatures of Eastern Kentuckian's who feel they're paying too much to insure their vehicles. What is the next step? He's writing President Bush hoping that someone can help.
Greer says he has received response from Kentucky politicians, but they say the government cannot regulate insurance rates. Now he's hoping this will catch the attention of politicians on the federal level.
