This spring, parts of Eastern Kentucky got more than double the amount of rainfall than last year ... and that's leaving some farmers with a new problem - too much rain.
H.G. Williams says last year's drought really affected his farm.
"We didn't have any feed for our cattle," Williams says.
now, williams faces a new problem.
"This year, we have too much rain."
The National Weather Service in Jackson says more than 14 inches of rain have fallen in some parts of Breathitt County, compared to the seven inches it received this time last year. One senior forecaster says the overflowing rivers that soaked the area the past few weeks can take its toll on farmer's crops.
"If those rivers exceed their banks, then they tend to drown out crops that are down there," Dusty Harbage says.
The rains in the past six weeks forced williams to feed his cattle high feed protein that he normally uses in the winter instead of this hay. He says the rain has lowered the quality of the hay.
Williams says. "It should've been almost ready for the second cut so its poor quality so we're going to have to have more protein for the cows."
Harbage says believe it or not, this is not the worst he's seen in Breathitt County.
"According to records, this is like the seventh wettest spring we've had so far."
Williams says that's just the way things go.
"Just got to take it one day at a time, one year at a time and go on."
