After a fire consumed his home, a Knox County man found himself living out of his pick-up truck. But his luck is turning around as he gets ready to move into a new home.
Dennis Carter has had a rough last year ... everything from a near-fatal ATV accident, to his home burning to the ground. But thanks to a lot of generosity, and help from a local agency, he says he is now happier than ever.
Dennis Carter says he was pronounced dead after the ATV accident a year ago.
"They were reporting I had died, and they wrapped me up there. Next thing I know I ended up at the Barbourville hospital," says Carter.
But in the months to come Carter says there were moments in which he wished he had died.
"I was getting through my recovery ... and then two days before my birthday my trailer burned ... it's just been a bad ordeal," says Carter.
Carter soon found himself living out of his truck.
"I had this tarp on top of this ... and this down here for a porch," says Carter.
K.C.E.O.C. officials say they knew they had to reach out to carter, despite his unwilliness to be helped in the past.
"He came up to get assistance, saw a lady with a handicapped child, and gave her his number and he left, because he said she needed it worse than he did," says Deloris Cornelius.
But after some phone calls, Premiere Homes in Middlesboro donated a six thousand dollar trailer. Others covered the moving costs.
"As of now, I couldn't be no happier," says Carter.
And he says from now on he'll be more willing to ask for help.
"I'm about ready to cry," says Carter.
Officials with the K.C.E.O.C. Community Action Agency in Knox County say the most important thing is for people to ask for help when they are in these kind of situations. They say usually your local community action agency will either be able to help you, or find someone who can.
