Volunteers are hoping people in Eastern Kentucky take advantage of free healthcare this weekend.

This year's Remote Area Medical Clinic at Pike Central High School doubled in size to take on more patients. Nearly 600 were treated today and volunteers hope to see about the same amount of people tomorrow.

"Because of the double number of dental chairs and also the number of optometrists that are participating in the event, we're seeing people at a faster pace than normal and I encourage people to attend," said RAM Coordinator Carol Napier.

Before this year, patients in Kentucky could only receive vision screenings. A change in state law now allows optometrists to take part in these clinics, allowing patients to leave with a diagnosis and treatment.

Dr. Bill Webb expects 250 patients to leave with brand new glasses free of charge.

He treated Betty Boyd who is coping with a rare eye condition. She has not been able to read for the last several years and will soon get glasses to correct the problem.

"When he did the clicking around, and got the vision clear, I started to cry because I could see," said Boyd.

The clinic also offers free medical and dental care. Volunteers are handing out tickets for Sunday's clinic at 8 P.M. Saturday. It reopens at 6 A.M. Sunday. Patients are seen on a first come, first serve basis.

I would like to thank all the people who took part in letting this happen. I am uninsured and I think I am speaking for so many people who are the same. I received many treatments that I needed and has helped me. Thank you again, and hope I and everyone can continue receiving the treatments again next year.

While I applaud the various health care professionals who gave their time to the RAM program and the foresight of the officials who helped to make it possible, this should not be necessary. We live in the United States, and health care should be available all the time to every American citizen. The idea that health care is a privilege is a falsehood developed by for profit health providers. Basic health care should be a right. This is just one of the many areas the US lags behind the rest of the industrialized world in because we have been told that everything must be operated under the principles of free market capitalism. The only problem with that is there are always losers in the free market Health care is not a place for a win/lose approach.
