It sounds almost too good to be true in this economy, but it's possible more than one thousand jobs are coming to one county in eastern Kentucky.

A waste conversion company is considering Clay County for a new plant site.

Nothing is set in stone, but Manchester City officials have reached a mutual agreement with Waste Not Technologies.

After a year of small talk, things are starting to move forward.

Manchester's slogan is "the city of hope" and that's exactly what city officials are doing.

"It could not be a more perfect thing at a more percent time for our community," said mayor Carmen Lewis.

With a city battling a high unemployment rate...the Manchester mayor is hoping a new plant means new opportunities for the city and Clay County.

"What it would mean for our community is you cannot even put it in words. You cannot even put in words..it would be like our community even bigger than it was when we were the booming coal town like we used to be," said Lewis.

The mayor says the benefits of the business will not only benefit Manchester and Clay County, but all of eastern Kentucky.

"Not only for our community...but for that many jobs in the future..but for all the communities around us, Hazard, Hyden, so many different people around us. It would be fabulous for the entire region," said Lewis.

For now, nothing is for sure.

Waste Not Technologies is looking at a few other possible sites but officials could not say the locations.

If the company decides to build in Manchester, they hope to break ground at least by fall and open in late next year.

I will want a job their, it being a waste recycling plant is great. I'd drive from barbourville to Manchester if the money is right and it could offer a career for myself to provide for my family.

We sure hope this plant comes to manchester,we really need that economic boost in this region. People here are more than willing to work, we've really never had a opportunity. This would really be the greatest thing to happen for clay county since my generation! So many of our youth has had to leave our county to find reasonable employment, and that could all change. So i hope and pray this comes to pass!

So, Erin, are you trying to say that KY jobs pay far less than those out of state? Surely, Eastern KY jobs would pay right up there with that of other places. Minimum wage dominates this area and many employers, even though they can afford to pay far better, will not. It's all about the rich getting richer and you know the rest.
