The City of Prestonsburg is getting a facelift.
City officials hired teenagers from the "Let's Go To Work" program to paint every building downtown.
Officials say it not only gives the teens a paycheck, but the improvements are helping grow the community's economy, and it will not end when summer is over.
City officials say the improvements are attracting new businesses to locate downtown, and that's not all.
Officials are helping the teens develop their own painting business to open when the program ends.
16 year old Dylan Rudder is painting downtown Prestonsburg as part of the Let's Go To Work Program. It's a job he says he needs.
“My mom hurt her back in a car accident, she broke it, and she can't work right now. She needs helps with the bills and stuff,” Rudder said.
He and a dozen other teens have already painted all the city buildings and are now painting sidewalk lines, along with the rails and lamp posts in town.
“When you walk out in town and help make it look better, you really have a better appreciation for the town you live in,” Rudder said.
Others also appreciate their work.
Prestonsburg Economic Developer Brent Graden says because of the improvements, new businesses are planning to locate downtown.
“Really able to help the community grow at the same time to,” Graden said.
Another new business is on the way. Graden and others are helping the teens develop their own painting business for when the Let's Go To Work program ends.
“So not only can they take their skills that they've learned here today, but apply those to the real world by starting their own business,” Graden said.
Teens say this summer job is worth it.
“It's really rewarding, I mean the money we get from it, it's really nothing compared to what we're learning,” Necessary said.
Lessons officials say will keep paying after the summer.
The new painting business will be called "Brushes With Greatness."
The teens say people are already asking to hire them.
City officials are also helping the teens with resumes and applying for college.
