People are packing area state parks to celebrate Independence Day.

Officials at Jenny Wiley State Park in Floyd County say all of their campgrounds and lodges are full this weekend!

The holiday falling on a Saturday is a boost for business during a recession.

The May family drove over from Pike County to spend the weekend at Jenny Wiley State Park.

“Just handy for us and a real great experience,” Chuck May said.

Camping and boating here is a July Fourth family tradition they say they will not miss.

“We got so many church family and friends that come over here so we just have a great community weekend,” May said.

“Even though times are economically tough, what we're finding is that people are staying close to homes and enjoying places like Kentucky state parks,” Barbara Atwood said.

Like the Combs family who came to Jenny Wiley from Lexington.

They recently gave up a trip to Myrtle Beach to save money and are visiting Eastern Kentucky's mountains instead.

“We make these shorter trips and have just as much fun and get to stay away from home for awhile, be with the family and do these things the kids like to do,” John Combs said.

The holiday falling on a weekend has tourism officials seeing red, white, blue, and green.

All of the Jenny Wiley campgrounds and lodges are full for the weekend.

“With it being on a Saturday this year, it's really helped things out a lot. It seems like recreation is up more and the number of people coming out is up. It helps out economically for us,” Trinity Shepherd said.

Officials say that makes a good Fourth of July holiday.

Jenny Wiley State Park is hosting several events for all the tourists and local people too, including dances, pontoon rentals, and a Jenny Wiley Theatre performance.
