Volunteer fire departments in trouble
Many local emergency crews count on volunteers, and their numbers are slipping. They are always on call, and always the first to respond. They're capable of handling just about anything in an emergency.

They are always on call, and always the first to respond. They're capable of handling just about anything in an emergency.
"It can be anywhere from someone having an emergency medical call to someone's house on fire or a major car wreck or just a fender bender," says Avawam Volunteer Fire Department Chief Loenard Toler.
But volunteer fire departments are facing a big problem.
"We could use a whole lot more people to volunteer, to help out," Toler says. Chief John Newell with the Thousandsticks Volunteer Department says, "They're begging for volunteers, pleading for volunteers."
Volunteer fire departments are seeing a steady decline in the number of firefighters. Perry County alone has 14 volunteer departments, and they say they all need more support. Toler says, "It's just, I guess, a desire to help people; your friends and neighbors and your community."
Officials say the risk involved in fighting fires may be driving people away from volunteering. Leslie County has six volunteer departments, and while none of them have had any major injuries or deaths, Chief Newell says it requires a brave person. "It does take someone with courage; one who's willing to come to the point of even risking their life."
And volunteer fire departments can actually help people save money by creating a safer community. Toler says, "The more equipment and the more people have, the lower we can lower your insurance rate for homeowners."
Volunteer firefighters must complete 20 hours of training before they can respond on call, and 150 hours before they are certified. The Perry County volunteer fire departments hold informational meetings the first Sunday of each month at 2 pm. They encourage anyone interested in volunteering to attend.

Why are fire dept personal not paid like everyone else in State & county Goverment. We need them much worse then most county empolyees.Ther are no jobs we need the paying jobs.the communitys need the people on duty 24 -7.=Go down to Pike and look at the lazy democrats laying around court house's, doing nothing-they pay them.Pike Co. just sucks, our officals have enough sucks on hand outs, to keep them in office.while we suffer.
People have become to self centered to think about anyone but themselves. I would love to volunteer, but do to a medical condition I am unable to do so. Many memebers of my family volunteer and I appreciate everything that all the volunteers do to help out in the communities. It isn't about the money, it is about having the kindness in your heart to want to help others.
This is a problem that all volunteer fire departments are facing. They all need more volunteers. It seems the greatest shortage is during the daytime hours through the week. With more demanding jobs and family needs, current volunteers are spread very thin. With all of the daily demands from their jobs and familys there is also training requirments they must meet in addition to maintaining their equipment. There is a lot involved being a volunteer firefighter. For those that take the challenge to be a volunteer firefighter or resuce person, God Bless you for what you do and the time you spend in your volunteer service. You are truly special people. We need more like you. Please be safe in your work and good luck.
