Captain James East with the Hazard Police Department says the fire was definitely arson. Now, they are working to track down who is behind it.

The smoke has cleared, but the mystery remains as to who set the fire at Cliff Hagan's. Hazard police are working with a state arson investigator to find out. "He has identified several ignition points within the restaurant that is consistent with it being intentionally set," says East.

Police say evidence is bringing them closer to a suspect. East says, "Through some local business video surveillance that the person of interest entered that back part of the premises during the time that the business was closed."

East says shortly after, the person of interest is seen leaving the restaurant, and smoke and flames can be seen coming from the restaurant within minutes.

"Well that's a shame, I hope that's not what happened. But I guess things like that do happen. I don't know" says Lee Burns. He and his wife work across the street and drove by Cliff Hagan's shortly after the fire was set.

Burns says, "The whole street was lined with fire trucks and emergency vehicles and police cars we were kind of stunned."

His wife Beverly says, "This was the last or one of the last certainly, so it's a shame to see it go."

Captain East say the building is likely a total loss. "It appears as if the whole roof has collapsed and all of the salad bar area is completely destroyed."

He says there are several people that may be connected to this crime. Captain East says they do not want to release that surveillance video just yet. He says they have several possible motives for the fire right now, but they are not releasing that either.

Actually, it does happen far more frequently in East KY. Call your local insurance companies and they can give you the exact numbers. That's why our insurance rate are three to four times higher than people who live in Lexington for example. Autos are burned more frequently as well. The numbers don't lie. East KY folks are scoundrals.

Things like this fire happens not only in eastern ky but all over the state. i hate that cliff's burned down, but this is just one incident when this happens all the time. get insurance and burn up home/building and collect insurance. I dont agree with that but it does happen all over the place not just eastern ky. people needs to quit putting eastern kentucky down. things like this happen in lexington, louisville winchester and other big towns.

Would have to agree with the others, times are tough right now, maybe an inside job to collect money, happens all the time, and just not in eastern Ky, but the whole state.
