Crews are still on the scene of a large fire that destroyed at least four businesses in downtown Beattyville.

The fire started started around 7 a.m. this morning and quickly consumed Jack's IGA on Main Street before spreading to other businesses.

The fire almost damaged the post office, but fire crews were able to save it.

13 fire departments from nearby counties were called to the scene to fight the fire.

One firefighter twisted his ankle, but is expected to recover.

Officials with the Department of Highways say Main Street is
expected to remain closed to through traffic. Motorists have been rerouted onto Kentucky 52.

We will have more on this story tonight at six.

To Billy in Lee City - It was not a meth lab. It was a grocery store and the news reported that it started in a compressor involved in the cooling systems. I hate to think people away from here are saying that kind of trash about such a devistating accident.

I dont think that anyone besides us that live in Beattyville could understand the true devistation of our losses. To people in larger towns and cities it wouldnt seem so bad. But to us...That was our history, our family.. I am thankful that no one was hurt but I cannot help but ask, "If there is a reason for everything, what is the reason for this? To destroy all we have worked for by fire and flood." Prehaps life has delt us a bad hand, or prehaps there is a lesson to be learned.
