An Eastern Kentucky Community is trying to cope after a weekend house fire claims the lives of a mother and infant son.
Meanwhile, investigators are trying to find out why flames broke out on Farley Bottom in McCarr early Saturday morning.
Loved ones are coming through Farley Bottom to lend their support to the family of 26-year-old Heather Smith and her 7-week-old son, Ethan Smith-Blankenship. The two were inside their home when it caught fire early Saturday morning. A family member spotted the flames, but it was too late to run inside and help.
Those who loved the mother and son are trying to wrap their minds around this tragedy.
"She loved children. It's amazing this house wasn't full of children that night. She usually watches my daughter and all of the children in the neighborhood," said Roby Pope, Smith's Brother-in-Law.
Smith's 6-year-old daughter, Makaylee, was staying at a neighbors home when the fire started. Smith's family says she was devoted mother and friend.
Fire crews say it's a call no firefighter can be prepared to receive.
"The mother was asleep on the couch and the mother had the bassinet just to the side of the couch. The fire appeared to have started in that area," said Gary Hatfield with Blackberry Volunteer Fire Department.
No matter how the fire started, it's left a community full of broken hearts.
Investigators do not suspect foul play in this fire. Both bodies were sent to Frankfort for autopsies.
Funeral arrangements are set for Heather Smith and Ethan Smith-Blankenship. Visitation is at R.S. Jones Funeral Home on Tuesday and Wednesday at 6:00 P.M. Funeral services are Thursday at 1:00 P.M.
