A woman is dead and her husband is recovering from a shooting in Knott County.

State police were called to the Topmost community early this morning.

Investigators say right now it appears this was a murder and an attempted suicide.

State police were called to two homes along Highway 7 just before 2:00 A.M. Saturday.

They first found 26-year-old Mack Tackett suffering from a gunshot wound to the face in a family member's home. They later found his wife, Heather, dead inside the couple's home next door.

Neighbors in Topmost say they are too shocked to speak on camera about what happened here. State police say 29-year-old Heather Tackett was shot at close range with a shotgun.

"Based on the investigation so far, it does appear he shot his wife and then turned the gun on himself," said Trooper Jennifer Sandlin.

Despite his wounds, Mack Tackett was able to make it to his mother's home next door.

"After he received the gunshot wound, he did walk to a nearby residence, and the person at that residence called 911 and reported the shooting," added Trooper Sandlin.

State police say no one else was in the Tackett's home at the time of the shootings.

Neighbors say the couple had been married for about two years, and had no idea there were problems between the two.

State police have not yet filed charges against Mack Tackett. He's in critical condition at a Tennessee hospital.

State police say the Mack and Heather Tackett did not have any children together. The shootings are under investigation.

not telling you say you know Mackie and that he is a humble person then you really did not know him if you go into his court records you will see he has abused everyone he has dated so i am sorry but i don't call that a humble person i believe this family deserves justice he did the crime so it is time for him to pay through the courts and spend the rest of his life in prison and throw the key away when he walks through the door

I want to pray for everyone involved. God bless Heather's family in their mourning. God bless Mackie's parents with dealing with everything that has went on. God judges people, its not my job to. I do pray for Heather's children, I am sure they need the prayers. I can't imagine losing a daughter, so my heart goes out to Heather's parents and her siblings. My heart also goes out to Judy. I know that she has to be suffering too. God bless you all.
