Current Harlan High School students go back to school Tuesday, a few days after the many alumni of the high school came back.
The morning may have started with a race, but this is really a celebration of a school's success, not an individual's.
It's a success of a high school and a town.
"It's a very unique and special bond, it's a lifelong bond. I think when you have a small high school in a small community, it's almost one in the same," Lisa Abraham, Class of 1982, said.
Harlan High School is celebrating its 100th anniversary, and hundreds of alumni came back for a fun weekend.
"A hundred years is great, been a lot of wonderful weekend of activities here. Had a lot of things going on, a great opportunity to see people I haven't seen in 20 years," C.D. Morton, Class of 1987, said.
Morton, who now works at Harlan High, came back to work at the school right after college.
"Came back in '92, and been here since. It's my home, my kids are here, my wife works at the school, we love it here," Morton said.
Abraham said she looked for jobs at Harlan schools just so she could come back home.
"I was really thrilled to have an opportunity to come back, and I really don't plan to leave," Abraham said.
It was a great weekend for the high school.
The football team won Friday night, three alumni were elected into the school's hall of fame, and alumni from the music group Musettes performed.
Charlotte Nolan, Class of 1946, was a charter member of the Musettes 65 years ago.
She says she is proud to be a small part of the school's tradition.
"It has a grand tradition in sports, in theater, in academics, it has a grand tradition. And a hundred years, that's so so special," Nolan said.
This was a weekend alumni will ever forget.
96 years ago, Harlan's first graduating class in 1913 had only six students.
