Chemical leak kills fish, raises concerns

Officials say the spill happened this weekend after some work at Cumberland Gap Provision in Middlesboro. They say it was anhydrous ammonia that leaked into Yellow Creek. The creek runs through downtown Middlesboro, and that's where crews are now cleaning up the mess left behind. One of the things they are doing is pumping oxygen into the water, oxygen they say was taken away by the chemicals. They say that's what likely killed all of the fish in the water.
People who live near Cumberland Gap Provision say they noticed the smell Saturday morning.
"It took you back, it went into your lungs, you could taste it," says Traci Barnett, who lives near the plant.
Officials say about 11 Saturday morning, while work was underway to expand refrigeration at the plant, some anhydrous ammonia leaked into the air and some into Yellow Creek.
"I got very scared, and I called my mother and my sister and I said we need to leave and we need to get a hold of all our neighbors, because it's happened again," says Barnett.
People hoping to fish along the creek in over the weekend, were greeted with the sight of dead carp.
"I don't like it, because a lot of people fish here, and they killed all of it," says Daniel Sherow.
Now crews are cleaning up all the dead fish, and officials at nearby water plants are testing the water as a precaution. Officials say there is no danger to people at this point, and they say in a few days, the water in Yellow Creek should be ready to be restocked with fish.

Many years ago Middlesboro had a tannery that was allowed to pollute. That pollution has lead to many cancer deaths, the inability to have children and ALS. (Lou Gehrig's disease) People (including city officials) allowed it to happen.I'm all for jobs but most of the jobs at Cumberland Gap Provisions are low wage jobs with no insurance and no benefits.Human life is more important than jobs. You need to educate yourselfs on the hazards of anhydrous ammonia and quit representing yourselves as ignorant people. Let the people at Smithfield know that we care about what happens to human beings!
What do you mean stop whining? How would you like to be sickened by this ammonia? You have don't know what you are talking about.
to the anonymous gap employee that seems to be a strong, union supporter, that's all they need huh! just look at d.c. see how much the union has help the country with the people they have bought. with union dues, really reassures one doesn't it. as for the company that has had the leak don't expect any concern from the EPA they're to busy trying save the two inch minnow in California and putting the pecan farmers out of business. can't have those pesky humans getting in the way of the environment.
