Downtown Beattyville is still recovering from the devastating fire one month ago.
But if not for the quick action of firefighters in the area, the damage could have been much worse.
The flames only burned for five hours, but firefighters still remember what happened.
"It's devastating, it's hard to put words to it," Tri-Community Fire Chief Charles Booth said.
If it wasn't for the quick action and teamwork from all fire departments, the damage would have been much worse.
"Looking back on it, I wouldn't change a thing, I think they did a great job," Primrose Fire Chief Michael Stamper said.
"Our plan came together under unfortunate circumstances, but it worked great. I am extremely proud of all the responders," Lee County Fire Chief Johnny Mills said.
The firefighters from all the area fire departments were honored in a ceremony in Beattyville.
Stamper said he was thrilled to be recognized.
"It's always good to get patted on the back, and I think it's good that the city's doing this for us," Stamper said.
Despite their efforts, there's still a lot of work to be done in the city.
Downtown businesses are still recovering from the flames.
Some places are cleaned up, but there's no timetable set for when they will reopen.
"Yeah they'll be some scars, but time heals everything," Booth said.
"I think progress is good, and in a year I bet we'll be back and better," Stamper said.
It's only been one month since the fire, but the town is on it's way to making it only a memory.
Firefighters and rescuers who were honored received letters from Senator Mitch McConnell and Senator Jim Bunning's offices.
They also received plaques, recognizing their bravery and teamwork.
