Program will continue to fill backpacks

Kids at Flat Lick Elementary in Knox County have come to rely on nutritious food, even on the weekends.

"I liked all the food and snacks in it," says Enrica Jackson, a student at Flat Lick Elementary.

But they remember what it was like before volunteers with Blessings in a Backpack filled them up with food every Friday.

"I was sleepy, yeah. 'That's the way you feel when you don't get all the food you need?' Yeah," says Jackson.

But thanks to Kentucky Harvest, and now funding from CSX, the year old pilot program will continue.

"It's gigantic what impact it's made on our kids," says Steve Partin, Flat Lick Elementary Principal.

And Monday mornings are a lot more productive.

"As far as the kids being more energized, I could tell a big swing in that Monday morning, because this program has provided them with the nutritional goodies to carry them over the weekend," says Partin.

And since 96 percent of students here qualify for free or reduced school lunch, the program's organizers are extending it to all kids. They just ask something in return.

"Do what your teachers ask you to do, study hard, go home and get plenty of sleep, eat as much as you can," says Stan Curtis, founder of Kentucky Harvest, USA Harvest and Blessings in a Backpack.

Blessings in a Backpack's slogan reads, "Feeding the Future of America."

Blessings in a Backpack is also sponsoring programs at schools in McRoberts in Letcher County, and Bevinsville in Floyd County.
