President Obama says he would like to shorten summer vacation and extend hours on school days.

He wants our students to be more competitive with other kids around the world.

The report released by the Associated Press says president obama believes kids spend too little time in the classroom.

The principal at Prestonsburg High School says adding more hours to the day and more days to the school year, is not the option he hopes the government takes.

Vacations like going to the beach or spending time at the swimming pool could be shortened soon if the school year is extended.

“I don't agree with it at all,” PHS Senior Brittany Peppi says.

President Obama would like to extend the school year to make kids more competitive with others around the world. PHS teacher Lori Bricken says the summer is not about time away from the books, it's about family as well.

“What makes America so great is our family values,” Bricken says “Summer is tough for our family. To me it’s time when I get to spend with my children and my husband.”

“Spending that time together, that's how they transfer values and transfer our culture to the next generation,” Bricken says.

Prestonsburg High School Principal Ted George says extending the year is not needed at his school.

‘We've had the highest test scores this year than we've ever had at Prestonsburg High School and we missed more school last year in the winter than we've missed in previous years,” George says.

President Obama would also like to see schools open up on the weekends to keep children safe as well.

“You’re looking at a lot of money that would have to go in to the school just to keep the building open,” George says.

Peppi is worried that more kids would drop out instead of staying in school.

“We don't want that,” Peppi says. “We're trying to put back in to school. To stay out of poverty and hopefully keep the college rates going up.”

George says there's one positive to President Obama's idea of having schools in session on some Saturdays.

“We’re providing food and safety and having them here as opposed to having them out where we don't have control of them,” George says.

But George says the process would take a lot of time and planning to extend the school year.

George says the President should look at all the options before proposing the idea of shortening summers for kids.

He says they should look at test scores throughout the nation before coming to a decision.

I understand the president's point, but think of all the money involved with this. Besides, children are not teachers responsibility everyday, they have families too. The whole point of wekkends and summer vacation is to let children study, exercise, and prepare themselves for the next week. If this project goes through, the taxes will be raised higher because the is not enough money to keep the school going, kids will drop out, and most will become depressed because they have no relax time with friends, or family. Summer school is for those who need it, not for those who are doing fine. You must think of how parents, teacher, and the children will respond to this action. Also, the article states that you want children to compete against other countries. I disagree because you are giving them a negative influence. We want to be friends with neighboring countries, not enimies, or competitors. That's just asking for war. These children are the future of America. Do not mislead them.

I am currently a Junior in high school here in Wisconsin, and am taking my fair share of time for an education. I am currently enrolled in two A.P. Classes. A.P. History and A.P. Lit. Mind you these are not honors classes, but College classes. Along with that, I am involved in NHS (National Honors Society) meaning i maintain a GPA of 3.4 and higher, along with serving my community. I also am in an internship for my school news paper, and along with my other classes, studying foreign languages. Every night, I spend around four to five hours on homework alone. I barely have anytime for my family. The whole proposal to increase school hours and days, is not a good idea. Not to mention, I do want a life outside of school, including a job to make money for my FUTURE. If I am in school for later hours, and more days, how will i support myself for college, driving, ect.? Also, how does Obama expect to pay the prices of this with our econemy being so 'poor'?

The reason the kids are doing so bad is they are facing way too high expectation from 1st grade, that sounds wrong I know but I grew up in another country where we were lucky to learn our alphabet and basic reading in 1st grade, guess what that country is kicking USA [edited] in education, on top of that we also only went to school for 10 years. Kids that young get tired of school when they are being worked too hard, there are ways to learn that does not involve test after test in elementary school. Also keep classes together for all the school years, having to constantly get to know new friends does not work either, same class mates, same teachers throughout the entire academic years.
