H1N1 vaccines are coming to Kentucky health departments weekly now, and are spreading further across the state.
In Pineville, the line started outside Bell County High School around 8:00 a.m. Saturday morning. Once the doors opened at 10:00 a.m., dozens were already waiting for vaccinations.
The health department wanted to vaccinate as many people as possible. The department receives weekly shipments of H1N1 vaccines, but there are still lot of questions about the safety of the vaccine.
"People are a little nervous about getting it. But with so much illness and so many people getting sick, it's better if you can to get vaccinated or get the mist," Johnna Long, of the Bell County Health Department, said.
Since the department is only getting a limited supply with a growing demand, officials wanted to distribute the vaccines in an efficient manner on Saturday.
"How we can control traffic control, how we can get them out in a certain matter of time and effectively," Kathy Fields, of the Cumberland Valley District Health Department, said.
In only one hour, more than 100 vaccines were given, with an average wait time of five minutes. The department was pleased with those numbers.
"Everything ran smooth, we were prepared. We had a lot of staff working, and we knew what we were doing. So it went well," Long said.
"It was easy, simple, and painless," Helen Messer, who got vaccinated, said.
The Cumberland Valley District Health Department oversees five counties, and reports there hasn't been a single fatality due to H1N1 in their area. Through these vaccine clinics, officials hope to keep it that way.
The next H1N1 vaccine public clinic the health district is hosting will be in Harlan on Wednesday. If you have any questions about vaccines available in your area, call your local health department.
