Voters went to the polls in two Pike County communities on Tuesday to decide whether or not to accept alcohol sales.

In Elkhorn City, voters had to decide whether to allow restaurant & store sales of alcohol. 357 people voted against the sales while 163 voted "yes."

Coal Run voters had the option to allow for limited alcohol sales in restaurants. That passed with a vote of 218 Yes to 163 No.

In Coal Run Village, alcohol can only be served at restaurants with a capacity of at least 50 people.

The results were announced just after 7:30 p.m. at the Pike County Courthouse.

A "yes" vote for Elkhorn City would have allowed alcohol to be sold anywhere. Elkhorn City Mayor Bill Powell said that if it was kept under control, alcohol could benefit the city economically. However, most voters disagreed.

In Coal Run Village, Fiesta Mexicana owner Henry Perez said he was surprised by the vote, but is happy with the result.

"Yeah, we really are excited. It's not just for me, it's not going to work just for my business, it's going to work for all the business around too and especially for the city too," Perez said.

Perez also says he plans to apply for an alcohol license as soon as he can. There's no word yet on when alcohol sales will begin in Coal Run.
