A Clay County teacher is arrested after police say she was high in the classroom! 42-year-old Marietta House Abner, a special education teacher, was arrested Monday at Goose Rock Elementary School.

Police say officials with the clay County Board of Education initially contacted the school resource officer about an employee at Goose Rock that was possibly under the influence. When the officer checked it out, he says he found Abner in no condition to teach.

Police say it was clear something was not right with Abner when they got to the school. Manchester Police Chief Jeff Culver says, "Suffering with slurred speech, poor balance, several other indicators that led him to arrest her for public intoxication."

Police say they don't believe her behavior was related to alcohol, but prescription drugs. Police say the pills Abner had with her were not in proper containers, and are being sent to a crime lab for identification. Abner was charged with public intoxication and both second and third degree possession of a controlled substance.

Some parents say the arrest comes as a surprise because their kids have always had a great experience at Goose Rock. Jessica Smith, mother of a 2nd and 4th grader says, "The principal and all, they're wonderful. I wouldn't want them to go to any other school. The teachers they have are wonderful, but it shocks me about what has happened."

Smith says when she drops her 2 kids off in the morning, she doesn't think about them being in danger at school.

"I expect them to be coming in to a safe environment and with teachers that are in their right mind that can teach them because that's what our kids need," Smith says.

Police say Abner is out of jail on bond.

Clay County Superintendent Reecia Samples declined an interview. On the phone, she says the school board is deciding what action needs to be taken after Abner's arrest. Abner was unavailable for comment.
