Smoke is still rising from a Thursday fire that burned down an apartments and a church building.

New Beginnings Church, still recovering from the devastation, held service for the first time since the fire.

On Sunday, middle school basketball teams from across eastern Kentucky were playing in the King of the Mountain Classic at the Knott County Sportsplex. Just upstairs, above the whistles and buzzers, New Beginnnings Church was worshipping

"The building was gone in just a few minutes, which included all of our church things and apartments all around," Pastor Gary Noe said.

"It was really a shock to all of us," church member Rachel Sexton said.

The fire started about 1:00 a.m. Thursday, and in about five minutes, the building was in ashes. The church lost everything from books, to seats, sound equipment, a piano, and many other items.

"We are upset, and saddened and shaken. But our faith in God is intact," Noe said.

Even though new beginnings lost all their material possessions in the fire, the pastor says they will be okay. Noe says you can replace a building, but you can't replace the people.

"At first, you feel the devastation. But then you're thankful because the you knew there were five families living in that building, and they all got out safe," Sexton said.

No one was injured in the fire, and now that the congregation is back together, they can begin healing and finding their next location.

"We desire to build a building. But if we found the building out there that was perfect for us, that would be wonderful," Sexton said.

"We're in the meantime just trusting the Lord that it'll work out," Noe said.

No matter where they go next, they'll continue having services every Sunday. Police still don't know what caused the fire, but say its probably electrical.
