Negotiations continued Saturday between the United Steelworkers Union and Appalachian Regional Health Care.

Saturday marks the end of the third week of USW strikes at all ARH hospitals and clinics and while talks continue in Lexington the strikes continue across the region.

Steelworkers have been on strike while negotiators try to settle a new contract with ARH.

"We are standing strong together. I mean we have had some awesome great community support," said Dana Owens.

Saturday, members of the Kentucky Education Association joined the United Steelworkers on the picket line.

"We did a march on Frankfort and the United Steelworkers went with us and helped us with our health care," said Shayne Wicker.

The strikers say Saturday may be a beautiful sunny day to be outside, but in their three weeks of picketing, they have seen all types of weather.

"We've been through floods, snow, sleet, monsoon, we've been through it all," Owens said.

But they say the strikes would have been much harder if they had not had the support.

"All of our local businesses here, the coal companies, the community support has been wonderful," Owens said.

Many of the striking employees say they miss their patients and their careers.

"We want out jobs back. We want to be in there working," Owens said.

The USW and ARH continued their negotiations Saturday in Lexington, but as of right now the talks will continue.

"It's that simple"....is it, Karl? From your comments, you obviously have no idea what you are talking about..Yes, ARH does owe it's employees something. It owes them the benefits and wages promised. For most people, going somewhere else is not an option, especially the people who have been with these places for many years, the older workers who have based their lives around the community that they live in...these workers are trying to keep the working conditions and benefits they have been getting. They made no demands this contract, they wanted to keep what they had, but ARH had different ideas of cutting benefits. Funny how they say that they(ARH) are suffering economically because of medicare and medicaid cuts, but they can pay "replacement" workers almost TRIPLE what they normally pay the regular employees!! None of this is "simple" to the ones on the picket lines, Karl, fighting for their benefits and their families future!! Keep that in mind before you talk of things you have NO IDEA about!!

I think this strike is a good idea. ARH workers deserve the benefits they had. I strongly stand by them. I encourage them on doing what is right for themselves instead of trying to please everyone else.

Better still, you should instead be asking if that's what the Steelworkers want. They're the ones who willingly walked away from their jobs. ARH didn't force them out. If ARH has to close some locations, the union brought that on, not the other way around. If I could work a union job for ARH and average $12 a hour for no more work than some of them do, I'd take whatever was offered to me. ARH doesn't owe anyone anything other than an employment opportunity, and if the benefits aren't good enough, go somewhere else. It's that simple.

I will not cross picket line to receive ARH services...I can go elsewhere until the people I know are back to work...I can wait..Can ARH?

arh is a health care facility, why do they not want decent healthcare and retirment for it's workers?

From what I have read and understand, they will still be paying only about 1/2 the cost that I pay for health insurance if their premiums go up (I work in health care too). They will probably be paying less than many professionals in the area for health insurance. Why do they believe they should not shoulder some of the burden for health care costs, like the rest of us?

yes that is what arh wants ,shut it down and make it nonunion then UK can buy it because that is the only way UK will buy into it ,might not be a bad idea because it might be a good company to work for. THANKS

the rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer even when it comes to health care workers we all need these people!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I went to see a doctor at Harlan ARH a few days ago, the CNA that checked me in didn't weigh me or take my pulse. In fact she act like she didn't know what she was doing. Is this what we have to look forward to at ARH. Get real ARH people want someone trained to take care of them not someone that you go out on the street and pick up to do job that was well done by the workers that were there before the strike. If this keeps up you will be closing the doors at Harlan ARH.

IT'S TIME ARH REALIZES THAT IF SOMETHING ISNT DONE...IT WILL BE CLOSING ITS DOORS!! IS THAT WHAT ARH WANTS???????
