Sunday, emergency medical service workers embarked on an adventure in bicycling nearly 400 miles over the mountains of Eastern Kentucky. They are doing it to honor the men and women who risk their lives every day in EMS and in memory of those who lost their lives in the line of duty.

Every day the men and women of EMS put their lives on the line for the citizens they serve and every year, these EMS heroes die helping others in their time of need.

"Since 1992, we've had over 26 EMT's and paramedics that have been honored that were killed in the state of Kentucky," said Robert Galvin with the Somerset EMS.

3 years ago, a bicycle ride was formed from New York to the National EMS Memorial in Roanoke Virginia. Now 5 men and women have started a second ride across Kentucky.

"They had 5 riders, so we're inspired by that. They have approximately 35 riders this year and when we all combine, we'll have close to 40 riders riding into Roanoke," Galvin said.

Each member of the long ride has their own personal reasons for participating.

"When I went to paramedic's school, I was awarded a scholarship called the Brian Jennemann Scholarship and he actually died from a disease he received in the line of duty," said Franklin EMS Worker Jenni Woods.

The group says they hope the attention they get from each passing car will help EMS workers across the state.

"In the state of Kentucky, EMS workers, there's no death benefits for their families so if we are killed in the line of duty, their families are kind of on their own," Galvin said.

They say they hope to eventually have 6 bicycle rides meeting in Roanoke to represent the 6 points on the star of life.

The EMS Memorial will be Saturday evening in Roanoke Virginia.
