A governor, a queen, and a marching band, what do these three things have in common? They were all a part of the Kentucky Mountain Laurel Festival Saturday in Pineville.

You couldn't have picked a more beautiful day or setting for this year's festivities and if you've never made it out to the Mountain Laurel Festival, imagine all the charm and grace of the Kentucky Derby, Southeast Kentucky style.

When you start the day off with a bang, you know everything is just going to come up roses, well Mountain Laurels to be exact.

"It's not only a festival to recognize the Mountain Laurel, which is a beautiful native plant, but also to recognize the tradition," said Governor Ernie Fletcher.

Make that 77 years of tradition with the annual parade keeping step with those children trying to find new places to store all their candy.

"We're watching the parade, watching the cars go by, listening to some music, getting some candy and stuff like that," said Jake Rose.

"We enjoy the community and all our visitors and would love to see more and more come," said Shawn Fugate.

But what's a festival without some beauty queen candidates, or 20 of them, from universities and colleges across the state all culminating in a coronation ceremony fit for a queen.

"We get to crown the queen, and give her a kiss, but I assure the first lady it's only on the cheek," Fletcher said.

Sarah Elisabeth Hargis of Centre College was named the 2007 Mountain Laurel Festival Queen.

The parade was wonderful, The biggest ever! Several organizations and companies put a lot of money and time into the floats along with all the local people who donated their time and money to help. It would be nice if more people would become involved. The South Carolina Drum Corp. did cause a break in the parade however, if you would have been in front of the Gov. you would have seen a real show. The sky divers was a new event that was very nice but once again it happened in front of the viewing stand. great job by all involved! Hope you continue planning for next year.

I loved the parade and festival this year. All the people involved went all out. There were a few pauses but the people were working hard to get that fixed. It's hard to get people to build floats! But those who do, put a lot of hard work and sweat into those things. Getting involved is the way to get more! I think that everyone involved did a great job. I can't wait for KMLF 2008

The parade was ok. The Gov. went through the parade so fast that it made it look like he wanted out of here, like he didn't like being in Pineville. There were to many pauses in the parade. Even kids were asking parents if the parade was over. There were like 10 min break in between each group. Like after the Gov. went through, there was like 10 mins. before the next group. It should of been a constance flow without breaks. Needs more bands from all over and more floats.
