The Perry County Sheriff's Department is investigating a possible scam.

Several people in the area say they've received phone calls asking for donations to help protect the officers, but Sheriff Les Burgett says the calls aren't coming from them.

The Perry County Sheriff's Department, like many other law enforcement agencies, depend on bullet proof vests for protection. But Chief Deputy Tony Eversole says despite what some alleged scam artists want residents to believe, the officers don't depend on the public to supply them.

"Local departments other than the KSP receive funds to buy bullet proof vests. Those funds are available through the sale of seized weapons," Eversole said.

If you're a big giver to charities, officials with the Better Business Bureau say you should not only give with your heart, but also with your mind. They say this isn't the first time this type of scam has been reported and there are several things you can do to protect yourself and help police track down the suspects.

"The BBB always urges the public to find out exactly who is calling and what the money is going for," said BBB Spokesperson Heather Clary.

Clary says another alarming red flag to watch for is if the caller wants to send a runner to your home to pick up a donation right away. If that happens, insist they don't visit your home until you check out the fundraiser and if necessary call police.

Officials say don't be fooled if the caller knows your name and address.
