Every year, the Kentucky State Police send hundreds of under privileged children to a special camp run by the state police called Trooper Island. To send all those children to camp for free, they have to raise money.

Nearly one hundred motorcyclists gathered at the Tri-County Cycle Sales in Corbin to raise money for the Trooper Island Children's Camp.

"We've had the camp and island since 1965. It's an island out in the middle of Dale Hollow Lake," said Trooper Walk Meachum.

The money raised goes to sending under privileged children to summer camp for free.

"It costs us about $300 per child to put them at the camp for the week, so we have to do a lot of these fundraisers to try to keep the island going," Meachum said.

So many of these riders say they are out doing something they love for a good cause.

"Hopefully we can raise quite a bit of money to send some more kids to have fun this summer and learn a little bit about nature and everything else they do," said Ken Burnett.

Each week, more than 60 children ages 10 to 12 attend the camp.

"Basically how it goes is two posts a week will go, I'll have 32 children from Harlan Post and London will also have 32 children to make up our 64 children," Meachum said.

Trooper Island Children's Camp runs May through August every year.

For more information on Trooper Island, state police officials say to just call your local post.
