Thieves break in to several Floyd County businesses this weekend, cutting the phone lines to the entire area in the process.

Police say someone broke into J & J Liquors in Betsy Layne and tried to get into a pharmacy and other nearby businesses along U.S. 23.

Police are looking for suspects and searching the area for clues.

Meanwhile, the business employees are cleaning up, repairing phone lines and doors, and ordering more merchandise.

Crews are putting in a new door at J and J Liquors in Floyd County.

Employees say when they came to work the front door was smashed.

When they went inside, they found all of the cigarettes in the store were gone, along with all the lighters and all the cash.

A few doors down, the Tanning Salon was also broken into, but nothing taken.

Police say the thieves tried to go through the ceiling to get into the Betsy Layne Pharmacy next door.

Investigators say the pharmacy's alarm wires were cut at four o'clock Sunday morning.

“Our trooper arrived on scene very shortly after that alarm and it is possible they did flee when the lights of his vehicle showed up,” Trooper Mike Goble said.

Police have no suspects.

“We don't know exactly it if was more than one person at this point in time,” Trooper Goble said.

They are investigating to see if the break-ins are connected.

“At this time, there's no definite way to say they are related, but it would appear to be,” Trooper Goble said.

The burglars also cut the phone lines to all the businesses on the strip. Crews are repairing the lines.

None of the business owners wanted to talk on camera but say they are cleaning up, making repairs, and J and J Liquor employees hope to stock their shelves again soon.

If you think you saw the burglars in the strip mall over the weekend or have any information on the burglaries, you should call state police.
