Proposed budget cuts to the coal industry from Washington could also mean less coal severance tax returns.

These tax dollars have helped many counties in eastern Kentucky.

Officials say coal severance money has helped install thousands of water lines in the past decade in Letcher, Knott, Breathitt, Floyd and other counties.

Lt. Governor Daniel Mongiardo says if anything, more money needs to be invested in coal.

“We need to figure out a way to bring coal into the 21st century using new coal technologies. Using coal to liquids, coal to fuels, so that we can decrease our dependence on foreign oil,” Mongiardo said.

Senators Johnny Ray Turner and Brandon Smith say officials in the mountains need to stick together to make sure this money stays in eastern Kentucky.

How many people really want nuclear power? You think coal is bad for the environment but nuclear could be the end of the environment. I would not want to live anywhere near a nuclear plant with terrorist trying to kill Americans. And the nuclear waste is hard to dispose of. Get real! I would much rather have coal than nuclear power and if you really care about the environment like you say you do you wouldn't want nuclear either!!! Coal is the only way to power America and it supports many other industries in America also like steel and so on.

If you are referring to my post. I'm saying that we've gotten so selfish that anything a president attempts to do is criticized as an attack on some particular part of the country. Sen Shelby for example wanted benefit a company in his state producing parts for a foreign company despite the fact that an American company had be selected as a cheaper/superior company. This is one small example. Where are the statesmen? Who will put the country ahead of party!!!So many lie in their graves who were willing to put their lives and futures on the line for this country! Giving up some coal severance money if it would help a little to put this country on a sane spending path is a tiny price to pay.

So you are saying that those of us that done some research and decided that Obama that not have this regions wellfare in mind concerning his agenda, should have voted for him anyway. If we had voted for him would he have had some kind of mercy on our state. We did not vote for him because we knew he wanted to kill the coal industery. It is pretty weak to support anything out of fear.
