The beginning of a new school year is just around the corner and many parents are busy shopping for school supplies. For some Eastern Kentucky families, the cost of the back to school basics is more than they can afford.
Before the first alarm clock goes off and the first bell rings, a group from Dayton, Ohio came to Hazard to make sure kids had what they need
For many, the start of school is exciting. New backpacks, fresh pens and paper, new clothes, but for some the start of school just means more money. So the Wal-Mart in Dayton, Ohio teamed up with Psychiatrist Constance Ange to gather up anything a young student could use for school and brought them to the old Wal-Mart property in Perry County.
"Plus about half the associates that work for me have ties to this area, so it was really personal for them as well," said Jason Rutledge, Wal-Mart Manager.
Pens, papers, clothes, shoes, there is a lot kids need for back to school, so the Dayton group brought everything they could imagine.
"We had one little girl give us bean bags, little Beany Baby's. She said please just make sure only the girls get the little beany bags, so okay we'll do that," said Dr. Ange said.
The group plans to come back and to give out clothes for winter.
"There were a lot of people here so evidently there was a huge need, because otherwise they wouldn't have waited for us at nine knowing we'd be here at ten. We were pretty excited to see everyone here," said Pam Keene who organized the event.
Any items left were donated to the police and fire departments in Hazard.
Close to nine hundred backpacks and about three hundred and eighty boxes of back to school supplies were given out.
