PIKEVILLE, Ky. - Host Pikeville College saw its season-opening win streak end on Saturday with an 80-70 loss in overtime to No. 20 Union College.
Pikeville (8-1 overall) had won its first eight games before falling on an afternoon it hit only 38 percent from the field and 57 from the line.
Union (6-3 overall) shot poorly as well, hitting 35.4 percent from the field. The Lady Bulldogs hit only 60 percent from the line, but shot 35 free throws compared to Pikeville's 21. Union was also the better team from outside, hitting half of its 26 three-point shots while the Lady Bears were only 6-of-18.
Pikeville led most of the way and led by nine twice in the second half, including 56-47 with 6:11 to play. After sophomore Lauren Potts sank a layup with 2:13 left, the lead was 62-57.
The lead was still four before junior Jessica Baker (Canmer, Ky.) hit two free throws with 28 seconds left. Pikeville was fouled but senior Alice Daniels only hit one of two, clearing the way for a game-tying three-pointer by junior Ashley Lunsford (Orlando, Ky.) with 15 seconds left.
Pikeville missed a layup in traffic at the horn to send the game to overtime.
Union scored the first five points in overtime and after freshman Kara Pile (Fairdale, Ky.) hit a three with 2:07 left, the Lady Bulldogs hit 7-of-9 from the line and limited Pikeville to only two field goals in the extra from to pull out the win.
Lunsford led four Lady Bulldogs in double figures with 17 points. She added six rebounds and five steals. Senior Susanna Todd (Eubank, Ky.) added 15, while Pile came off the bench for 14. Junior Brooke Smith (Pineville, Ky.) followed with 12 to go with nine rebounds.
Potts led the Lady Bears with 17 points. The guard also had six rebounds. Senior Alice Daniel followed with 15, while sophomore Natiera Hinton and freshman Megan Mosley added 11 each. Mosley contributed seven assists.
Senior Kristal Daniels had only two points but pulled down 11 rebounds in only 18 minutes of play. She led the Lady Bears to a 50-46 edge on the glass.
Union returns to Appalachian Athletic Conference play Wednesday when it entertains Milligan (Tenn.) College at 5:30 p.m.
