LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Kentucky football team will need to dig deep at the cornerback positions during Saturday’s game at South Carolina, Coach Rich Brooks indicated after Tuesday’s practice.

All-America candidate Trevard Lindley, who has started 43 consecutive games at cornerback, has been ruled out of the game because of an ankle injury sustained against Alabama. The other starting cornerback, Paul Warford, missed the Alabama game and could not finish practice on Tuesday as he recovers from a strained quadriceps muscle and is day-to-day.

“That’s life in football,” Brooks said of the prospects of playing a lot of young corners at South Carolina. “(Martavius) Neloms came in and did a really good job against Alabama in his first extended action when he was being tested. I think this is a great opportunity for not only him, but for the other guys behind him that haven’t seen a lot of action. We’re going to check our depth out real quick here and find out what we’re made of.”

Neloms is a true freshman. Sophomore Randall Burden has seen extensive playing time this season at cornerback, totaling 13 tackles and two pass breakups. Redshirt freshman Cartier Rice and sophomore Anthony Mosley have yet to see significant action in a game situation, but could do so against the Gamecocks.
