Campbellsville, Ky. – Nose guard Danny Hinkle blocked the potential game-winning Campbellsville field goal attempt with 44 seconds as UVa-Wise scored the game’s only 18 points in the second half a 32-31 comeback road victory.
After heading into the intermission trailing 31-17, the Highland Cavaliers (4-3/3-1 Mid-South East) scored on their first three possessions of the second half, all in the third quarter to pull ahead of the Tigers (3-3/1-1 Mid-South East). Quarterback Brad Robbins (Big Stone Gap, Va.) connected with Jason Lovett (Spotsylvania, Va.) on strikes of 18 and 42 yards before lasering what would be the game-deciding points to Matt Barbour (Naruna, Va.) on a 4th-and-11 at 4:22 left in the third.
The Cavs defense held the Tigers to 152 yards in the second 30 minutes after allowing 285 yards in the first half. UVa-Wise forced three consecutive punts followed by three consecutive turnover on downs before Hinkle (Inez, Ky/Sheldon Clarke) blocked the 30-yard field attempt with 44 ticks on the clock.
Robbins completed 21 of 37 attempts for 364 yards with five scoring touchdowns with two interceptions. Lovett pulled down nine passes for 175 yards and four scoring catches of 19, 32, 18 and 42 yards. Aric Evans (Cincinnati, Ohio) had his top game of the season with three receptions for 106 yards.
Along with the blocked field goal, Hinkle added seven tackles and two tackles for loss. Amondre Johnson (Roanoke, Va./William Fleming) paced the defense with nine tackles and a tackle for loss. Josh Weaver (Alexandria, Va.) contributed eight stops with Luke Spurlock (Big Stone Gap, Va.) and Matt Gular (Hampton, Va.) had seven stops each.
Dy Underwood rushed for 115 yards, only 32 yards in the second half, on 26 carries to lead the Campbellsville offense. Nathan Cooper threw for 281 yards on 20 of 39 tries with three scores. Harold Small added six grabs for 122 yards and two scores.
Tied at 14-14 after one quarter, the Tigers found paydirt two times in the first seven minutes of quarter number two. David Hon made his lone field goal with 5:54 for what would be the halftime score of 31-17.
UVa-Wise will return to Carl Smith Stadium next Saturday, October 17th for a 1:30 p.m. affair against Cumberland (Tenn.) University.
