Burial site uncovered by pipeline survey looted

ELIZABETHTOWN, Ky. (AP) - An archaeological site in Hardin County uncovered during a survey for a pipeline project has been struck by looters.

An official with the Kentucky Heritage Council says looting activity occurred at the site between visits by archaeologists.

The Courier-Journal reports that human remains were found at the Indian burial site over the summer during a survey for the proposed Bluegrass Pipeline. The newspaper obtained emails about the looting through a Freedom of Information request.

In them, Heritage Council archaeologist Kary Stackelbeck said the surveyors reported the discovered to the Army Corps of Engineers on Aug. 2. Less than a week later, Stackelbeck said looting had occurred.

Bluegrass Pipeline officials say they notified the landowner and authorities and have moved the proposed route of the pipeline to avoid the site.
