CO-WORKERS, FAMILIES AND FRIENDS WALK TO STOP DIABETES
Local Residents Make Every Step Count as Part of the Stop Diabetes Movement
LEXINGTON, KY (May 8, 2014) -- On Saturday, May 31, Close to 1,200 people will join together to Stop Diabetes® for the nearly 26 million American children and adults with type 1, type 2 and gestational diabetes and their families, friends, colleagues and caregivers. The American Diabetes Association will hold Step Out: Walk to Stop Diabetes to raise awareness about diabetes and money to fight a disease that affects close to 500,000 Kentuckians.
Walkers secure donations from family members, friends, co-workers and neighbors. These proceeds benefit the Association, which funds diabetes research, delivers services to hundreds of communities, and gives voice to those denied their rights because of diabetes. Diabetes is a major cause of heart disease and stroke. It is the seventh leading cause of death in the United States.
This year’s Step Out Walk will be at Keeneland Race Course on Saturday, May 31. Registration begins at 7:30am and the walk starts at 9am. Thanks to Novo Nordisk, Celebrity Chef Rory Schepisi will also offer up a healthy cooking demonstration and educational workshop where all participants will be able to get a taste of her twist on down-home, healthy cooking.
“Diabetes is a devastating disease that touches us all,” said Walk Chair, Jennifer Harris. “Step Out is a day to celebrate our Red Striders, who are children and adults with type 1, type 2 or gestational diabetes. It’s a day to raise awareness and recognize our teams, walkers and sponsors and celebrate their fundraising success! Come join us as we stop diabetes together!”
Most Step Out participants join or form Corporate, Family, Club, School or Church Teams, but individual walkers are welcome, too. Special thanks to our top event sponsors; Presenting Sponsor – Kroger Pharmacy, Gold Sponsor – UK HealthCare and Silver Sponsor – Powell Walton Milward Insurance.
