Jim Akers, Chief Operating Officer Bluegrass Livestock Marketing Group, Rotary Club of Lexington guest speaker

The Rotary Club of Lexington will hold its weekly meeting Thursday, February 28, at 12:00 p.m., at Fasig-Tipton, 2400 Newtown Pike. Jim Akers, Chief Operating Officer of the Blue Grass Livestock Marketing Group, will deliver the program. The title of the program is, “A Half Billion Dollar Secret Located in Lexington, Kentucky.” Jim will discuss the world market for beef and Kentucky’s contribution. Rotarian Jake Graves will introduce Mr. Akers.

Jim Akers was born and raised on a small tobacco and cattle farm in Hardin County, Kentucky and graduated from West Hardin High School in 1982. After studying agriculture at the University of Kentucky, he graduated with a B.S. in Animal Science in 1985. While at UK, Mr. Akers was a member of one of the most successful livestock judging teams in school history with three High Individual contest wins to his credit.

Jim Akers worked as a professional farm manager in Central Kentucky and then East Alabama for the next 15 years, with involvement in purebred and commercial cattle, sheep, tobacco, feed grains, hay and timber production. During this period he served the industry as President of the Kentucky Sheep and Wool Producers. He also serves on numerous boards.

In 2000, Mr. Akers made a career change, working for the University of Kentucky as Beef Integrated Resource Coordinator he was instrumental in the formation and operation of the Kentucky Beef Network and Southeastern Livestock Network and became a recognized expert on the issues and challenges that farms and markets face in the implementation of electronic identification systems. He was also credited with a significant increase in the number of calves participating in the Kentucky Certified Preconditioned for Health or CPH45 program, working cooperatively with local markets to make the program workable for producers and markets. During his tenure, Mr. Akers was recognized as the outstanding young Alumni for UK in 2000 and a Lifetime Honorary Member of the Livestock Judging Team in 2004.
In 2007 Mr. Akers made yet another career shift when he was tapped to serve as COO of the newly formed Blue Grass Livestock Marketing Group. Since that time, Mr. Akers has grown the company and diversified its operation well beyond the operation of seven local/regional livestock markets and an Internet marketing business. Their operations include Lexington, the largest auction market East of the Mississippi, and Stanford, built in 2007 as the newest, state of the art facility in the country.

He currently serves on the Kentucky State Veterinary Identification Advisory Committee and the National Livestock Marketing Association Government and Industry Affairs Committee and is a former board member of the Livestock Marketing Association.

Mr. Akers, his wife Christine and their two daughters Elizabeth and Caroline, live in Paris, Kentucky where Christine operates Paris Veterinary Clinic. In Paris, Mr. Akers serves as the Chairman of the Long Range Development Committee for St. Mary School, is past President of the School board and the Annunciation Church Parish Council. The family is active in 4-H and many other youth related activities.
