Lexington's First Honor Flight Set to Depart

LEXINGTON, Ky (WKYT) 30 Kentucky Veterans of World War II and Korea on
Sponsored Flight to Washington, D.C. Memorials

WHAT: Honor Flights transport US Veterans to Washington, D.C. to visit and reflect at their memorials. Top priority is given to the senior Veterans – World War II survivors, along with other Veterans who may be terminally ill. The day-long trip is free to the Veterans and is sponsored fully by Hallway Feeds. This is the first ever such flight from Lexington.

WHEN: June 6, 2014, the 70th anniversary of D-Day. The flight will depart Lexington’s Blue Grass Airport at 10 a.m. and return at 7:45 p.m. for a “Welcome Home” celebration. Media are invited to cover both the departure in the morning or the “Welcome” party at Bluegrass Airport on their return. Media are encouraged to arrive at the airport beginning at 8:00 AM. The flight will arrive back from DC at approximately 745PM when there will be an elaborate welcome event, featuring:

• Bag pipe and drum corp will lead them through security back into main area of airport
• Lexington Mounted Police
• Boy Scout Troops
• Patriot Guard Riders
• Knights of Columbus
• Sons of American Revolution
• Fort Knox Army Band

WHO: 30 World War II Veterans and other Veterans from the Korean and Vietnam wars -- including four with ties to the Normandy Invasion; a Veteran who served in World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War; a Bronze Star recipient; and a Veteran who served in World War II along with his father and two brothers. NOTE: Rep. Andy Barr will travel on the flight from Lexington and spend the day with them.

WHERE: Bluegrass Airport. The flight will originate in Louisville and fly to Lexington to pick up additional Veterans. Day’s schedule at end of this alert.

WHY: The nation is losing more than 1,500 World War II Veterans daily, and over 500 Korean Veterans daily, Honor Flight Bluegrass hopes to take as many Veterans to their Memorial as possible. There are more than 200 Veterans on the waiting list for the Bluegrass chapter alone.

HOW: Veterans will travel for free to their Memorial courtesy of Hallway Feeds, whose generous donation provides airfare, ground transportation and meals for the Central Kentucky Veterans and their Guardians.
