Local volunteer wins national award

The Volunteers are the Foundation of Hospice Awards recognizes hospice volunteers who best reflect the universal concept of volunteerism in its truest sense—serving as an inspiration to others. These prestigious awards were presented during the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization’s 14th Clinical Team Conference in Kansas City, Missouri in September.

Opal Phillips, from Lawrenceburg and a volunteer with Hospice of the Bluegrass, won for Organizational Support. This category is for volunteers whose work includes fundraising, board service, and/or administrative support.

Opal began her hospice volunteer work in 2002 and has provided more than 5,000 hours of service. Opal provides companionship for numerous patients, respite for caregivers, transportation services, conducts oral history projects with patients, delivers meals, serves as a “buddy” for children at grief camps, and is active on Hospice of the Bluegrass’ Frankfort Advisory Board, Outreach Committee and Event Fundraising Committee.

“We are so proud of Opal and all she contributes to Hospice of the Bluegrass,” said Gretchen Brown, President and CEO. “Her amazing service and commitment is truly a gift of caring that makes a world of difference to patients and their families. She inspires us every day.”

Throughout her life, Opal has been committed to improving her community. In her words, she stays motivated to help others because, “life circumstances change, but love does not.”

For 35 years, Hospice of the Bluegrass has provided quality end-of-life care and support for terminally ill patients in their homes, nursing facilities and at the Hospice Care Centers in Lexington and Hazard. Hospice of the Bluegrass never denies anyone services because of an inability to pay. Support and bereavement services extend to family members, caregivers, and anyone in grief in the community.
