UK Head Football Coach Joker Phillips will be the feature guest speaker at The Rotary Club of Lexington Thursday, July 12.
LEXINGTON, KY – The Rotary Club of Lexington will hold its weekly meeting Thursday, July 12, at 12:00 p.m., at Fasig-Tipton, 2400 Newtown Pike. The program will feature guest speaker Coach Joker Phillips, University of Kentucky Head Football Coach. Tom Leach, “The Voice of the Wildcats,” will introduce Coach Phillips.
A former Kentucky player and record-setting offensive coordinator, Joker Phillips has been a bundle of energy since becoming named head coach of the Wildcats.
Phillips first act as head coach was to imprint his personal philosophy, “Operation Win,” on the team – win in the classroom, win in the community and win on the field.
In his first season, he won more games than any first-year UK coach since 1954. He also extended UK’s school-record bowl streak to five-straight appearances, and in the process became the first Kentucky head coach to take his team to a bowl game in his first season.
Phillips also has posted two of the biggest wins in recent Kentucky history, ending long-time streaks with wins over South Carolina and Tennessee. UK’s victory over the Volunteers was a masterful coaching performance. Without a healthy quarterback available, Phillips and the staff devised a game-winning plan with a wide receiver filling the quarterback role.
A native of Franklin, Ky., Coach Phillips was born to be a Wildcat. He was a wide receiver at UK under Hall of Fame Coach Jerry Claiborne and helped the Wildcats to a pair of bowl appearances. Phillips went on to play three years of professional football, including two seasons with the Washington Redskins.
After his playing days, Phillips served two terms on the Kentucky football staff, 1988-96 and 2003 to the present. During his time as offensive coordinator, UK had the highest-scoring offense in school history and broke numerous NCAA, SEC and school records. In addition to UK, he also has coached at South Carolina, Cincinnati, Minnesota and Notre Dame. All totaled, he has played or coached in 11 bowl games.
Phillips is married to Dr. Leslie Phillips, a professor at Georgetown College.
