A group of people in Hazard spent their Saturday picking up trash. The group, called the Pathfinders, is dedicated to promoting physical activity. The student group, based out of Hazard Community and Technical College, were the ones spear-heading the clean up, but some adult Pathfinders and new volunteers were also present.

Most people consider the North Fork of the Kentucky River an asset to Perry County and some, like the Pathfinders, are dedicated to keeping it clean and beautiful.

"We adopted the riverside so once a month we go out and just pick up trash along the river," said Krystle Chipman, who found the student Pathfinders.

"We're giving the community an opportunity to make this a better place to live, a cleaner environment, a more beautiful place," said Cynthia Cole, the president of Pathfinders.

The volunteers geared up with gloves and garbage bags, ready to clean the river bank.

"I don't think people realize how much trash accumulates here and they can do something about it and it's really easy. All you have to do is pick up a trash bag," said Chipman.

The volunteers found all sorts of things in the river from bottles and cans to clothing and scrap metal.

"Lots of trash along the riverbank. Lots of broken glass, plastic bags, clothing," said Barbara Hammonds, a new volunteer.

Barbara came to the clean up with her two daughters as a family affair.

"This is our community. It's where we live. We should be taking an interest in our environment," Hammonds said.

Many of the volunteers feel the same way and hope more people in the community will join them in the future.
