BENTON, Ky. (AP) - Famers in western Kentucky are planting more wheat in an effort to make up for last year's losses due to the drought.

Farmer Mike Soper told The Paducah Sun that he has planted 250 more acres of the crop this year on his land in Ballard County. He says he hopes to begin harvesting by June 10.

The newspaper cited data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture in reporting that Kentucky farmers planted 680,000 acres of wheat this season. That's a 100,000 acre increase over last year and marks the highest level of planting in five years.
