BELL COUNTY, Ky. (WYMT) - Thousands of people are expected to get free school supplies and other items at the annual Back to School Giveaway in Bell County on Friday evening.
The Lighthouse Mission group is giving away free school supplies, clothes, shoes, and other items to children who need it.
It starts at 5:00 on the athletic field at the old Bell County Vocational building in Pineville where the Lighthouse Mission is located now.
They have enough items for more than two thousand children.
"We have churches from ten different states here to help minister to the children and show them the love of Christ by giving them school supplies, clothes, shoes, free haircuts," said Sharon Teaney, Lighthouse Mission Director.
There will also be free food, games and prizes. Children must be present to receive the items.
A group from Florida is helping to provide clothes, shoes, and school supplies for thousands of children in Eastern Kentucky.
Boxes of clothes and other items fill the Lighthouse Ministries building in Pineville.
"It's great to be able to help them. We're packing bags for kids going back to school. We're sorting socks. We're sorting shoes, just anything we can do," said Leah Bryant.
They are preparing to give the items to children in Eastern Kentucky whose families are on hard times.
"I saw the need that was here. I felt that God was calling me to come back and do whatever is needed to learn from this experience," said Angel Martin.
Lighthouse Ministries is distributing the school supplies, clothes, and shoes next Friday at the annual Back to School Giveaway. They are expecting more than two thousand children.
"For us, just to pack socks for them, I know that means a lot for them and for their families, so it was good to be a part of it," said Martin.
Another church group from Tennessee is also helping with the giveaway. Courtney Graves and Jordi Domingue have spent their summer at Lighthouse Ministries preparing for the event.
"We both really felt called to missions, so as we were praying about that and where would we go and God kind of placed it in our lap. It's not what we expected but it's been awesome," said the girls.
The young adults are proud to provide the items for children, but say they are the ones reaping the rewards.
"To be able to be a blessing to kids that really need it, it's a blessing," said Bryant with tears in her eyes.
The Lighthouse Ministries Back to School giveaway starts at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, July 19th at the former Bell County Vocational School's athletic field. There will be games, prizes, music, food, school supplies, clothing, shoes, and free haircuts. Children must be present to receive the items.
