BELL COUNTY, Ky. (WYMT) - A Bell County car dealership owner and two former employees appeared in court on charges related to not paying finance companies.
Several customers filed criminal complaints against Lee Motors, owner Terry Lee, and former employees Steve Bailey and Mildred Campbell.
One customer told us Lee Motors did not make the payoffs on trade-in vehicles.
Tuesday morning, Lee, Bailey, and Campbell pleaded not guilty to the charges. The Bell County Court Clerk says a preliminary hearing is scheduled for July 30th.
Some customers say a Bell County car dealership did not make the payoffs on trade-in vehicles.
Now the Lee Motors dealership and two former employees face criminal and civil complaints.
Shawn Fugate II says he paid to his employer, Lee Motors, $28,732 for a vehicle. He says the money was supposed to go to a finance company to payoff the previous owner's loan.
"I thought it was going to be paid off, but that didn't happen," Fugate said.
The Assistant Bell County Attorney says an investigation shows $26,732 never made it to the finance company.
Fugate has filed a civil complaint against Lee Motors and former employee James Steve Bailey.
"It was always 'we're going to get your vehicle paid off next week, at the end of the month it'll be taken care of,' and those things never happened," Fugate said.
The Assistant County Attorney says four others have also filed similar criminal or civil complaints. State Representative Rick Nelson says he is one who filed complaints.
State Police are also investigating.
"They have written checks for tax bills. Registration was never tendered. Those individuals still do not have titles to the vehicles they're driving in some cases," said Assistant County Attorney Christopher Douglas.
They are also investigating whether there are more victims.
Douglas says the criminal complaints against the two former employees are filed, but Bell County District Court officials say they have not been served yet.
District court officials say Lee Motors and the two employees do not have defense attorneys listed yet.
Business owner Terry Lee was out of town on Wednesday and we could not reach him for comment.
