They are typically the ones who fight the fires, but today firefighters from all across the southeastern region came to the Cumberland Gap to set a fire.
19 firefighters took part in a controlled burn at the Cumberland Gap National Forest.
Firefighters actually arrived at the park mid morning but had to wait until Tuesday afternoon to set the flames.
Officials say wind and temperature are key factors in making sure the fire stays where it should.
"We have to have correct temperature due to our endangered species here which are the Indiana Bat that resides in our caves," Shane Sturgill said.
