MIDDLESBORO, Ky. (WYMT) - Dozens of people participated in a fitness "Freedom Challenge" on the Fourth of July in Middlesboro to raise money for the Wounded Warrior Project.
The event was called "Hoop'n 4 Heroes."
The participants ran a 5K in the morning and then had other events at a local gym.
The event raised more than $18,000 for the Wounded Warrior Project.
"Wounded Warrior Project is near and dear to my heart. I have a lot of friends who've been wounded in action, been there on the battlefield with them and just came to support them," said Dan Staggs who came from Fort Knox to participate.
"It goes to programs to help get through life better, help them out get arms, prosthetics and stuff, so I figured if I can't fight with them overseas anymore, I can fight with them over here," said Todd Smith, event organizer.
Organizers want to make this an annual event on July 4th.
