BELL Co., Ky. (WYMT) - A freak accident on Monday morning, in the Stoney Fork community on Bobby Helton Spur, killed 56-year-old Gervous Caldwell.

We spoke with family members Monday evening. One cousin said Caldwell and his friend were tearing down a home to make room for a church parking lot. That is when old house collapsed.

Bell County Rescue Squad Captain Steve Barton said his crew responded to the accident around 9 a.m.

"The house looked like it had an original and then an addition," said Barton. "So when it collapsed, one brought the other one down with it and unfortunately caught him in it."

Old wood and insulation is all that is left.

"You do see a lot of building collapses when people are doing demolition because it affects the structure of the building," Barton said. "The structure will become unstable and they don't really know it until it's fallen."

The Arnett & Steele Funeral Home, in Pineville, is handling the arrangements.
