Middlesboro man pleaded not guilty to murder of his son

He's accused of murdering his own son. Middlesboro Police say 51-year-old Garry Baker, Jr. stabbed his 24-year-old son Joshua Baker to death in February.

A grand jury indicted him on a murder charge.

Monday morning he pleaded not guilty during his arraignment in Bell County Circuit Court.

Joshua Baker's mother Angela Johnson and sister Tiffany Overton were in court. They were wore white ribbons in memory of their son and brother.

"I miss his smile. I miss him coming in and putting his arms around me, and telling me his loves me," said Angela Johnson, Joshua Baker's mother.

Middlesboro Police say Joshua Baker's own father, Garry Baker, Jr killed him. Police say he stabbed his son to death during an argument in February.

"For my dad to do this, I'm empty, I'm empty, I'm lost," said Tiffany Overton, sister of Joshua Baker and daughter of Garry Baker, Jr.

The two women say they went to see him jail and asked him what happened.

"I flashed a picture at him of Joshua," Johnson said.
"No remorse, he didn't care," then Overton said.

Baker, Jr. has claimed self-defense but Johnson and Overton say they do not believe him.

Garry Baker's defense attorney did not want to comment at this time on the charges or the case.

Overton says even though Baker, Jr. is her father, she wants him punished.

"No matter what he gets or what they may to do him, it won't be enough and it won't bring Josh back," Overton said.

The judge set a pre-trial conference for May 19th.



A Middlesboro man is dead, and his father is charged with killing him.

Police say Garry Baker, Jr. stabbed his son Joshua Baker to death.

"It's not every morning you wake up and hear you're not going to see your best friend again," said Tyler Cox, Josh Baker's friend.

Cox's friend, 24-year-old Josh Baker, died Thursday night. Police say Baker's own father stabbed him to death during an argument.

Cox does not know why.

"Josh was a good hard-working fellow. He was usually happy go lucky for the most part," said Cox.

Middlesboro Police say they responded to a call at a home on Evans Drive at 10:40 Thursday night. Once there, officers say they found Josh Baker with a stab wound in his chest. He died at the scene.

Police charged his father, 51-year-old Garry Baker, Jr. with murder. Baker, Jr. pleaded not guilty to the murder charge. His defense attorney had no comment. He has a preliminary hearing scheduled for February 25th. Jail officials say bond is $500,000.

Cox is still trying to come to grips his best friend is gone.

"Anything I needed help with, he was there, and anything he needed help with, I was there and vice-versa. I'm gonna miss him a lot, I really am," said Cox.

Shumate Funeral Home in Middlesboro is handling the arrangements for Josh Baker.

Police charged Garry Baker, Jr. with murder. Officials say he entered a not guilty plea in district court on Friday morning. He is in the Bell County Detention Center on a $500,000 bond.

The state medical examiner's office will conduct an autopsy on the body.
