BELL COUNTY, Ky. (WYMT) - A portion of one Bell County highway is missing! Part of State Highway 987 in Brownies Creek fell into the Cumberland River early Tuesday morning!

A big hole is on Highway 987 at the head of Brownies Creek near mile marker 7. The pavement is in the Cumberland River below. Much of the ground underneath the road also washed away.

"A cliff basically in the middle of the road," said Chris Webb.

Chris Webb lives down the road and discovered the road missing early Tuesday morning.

"It was all gone and you could see underneath the left lane which is something you don't see everyday," Webb said.

Officials say no one was on the road when it fell and no one was hurt.

State transportation officials say the recent heavy rains caused the slide.

"It's all contributed to the groundwater penetrating through and of course to it being adjacent to the Cumberland River also," said Robert Perkins, Section Engineer with the State Transportation Department.

Officials say the stretch of highway will be closed for several weeks while crews stabilize the ground and rebuild the road.

"We're currently exploring options for the repair method and once we evaluate those, we'll determine the best route to proceed," Perkins said.

The slide creates more than travel inconveniences for those who live in Brownies Creek.

"In order to get to the mailbox right now, you're going to have to drive all the way around to Colmar just to get to the mailbox that's only a hundred feet down the road," Webb said.

Crews say they will work as fast as they can to build a new road.

Crews are setting up detours around the closed section of the highway.
