MIDDLESBORO, Ky. (WYMT) - Middlesboro Police caught a thief in a church!
Officers say 24-year-old Christopher Thacker stole items and then tried to hide from officers inside the First Baptist Church.
Middlesboro Police say it started on Dorchester Avenue on Wednesday morning.
"We received a bunch of calls of vehicles being broken into," said Lt. David Buis.
Lt. Buis says he had a suspect and later spotted the man with a backpack.
"Attempted to pull in and he took off running," said Lt. Buis.
He says the man, Christopher Thacker, ran to the First Baptist Church.
"They buzzed him in which gave him a little bit of a run on me. I had to wait to be buzzed in myself," said Lt. Buis.
Police say they found and arrested Thacker inside the church building but say he did not have the backpack anymore. Police say they found it hidden under a church sofa.
"We had to locate it in the church after an hour search. We found out he had several of the items reported missing from some of the car thefts," said Lt. Buis.
None of the church employees in the building at the time of the arrest wanted to comment on the situation. Police say they did not know Thacker was wanted when they let him in the building.
Thacker is now in jail. He is charged with receiving stolen property, tampering with physical evidence, and public intoxication.
Thacker claims he did not do it.
"He admits no wrongdoing whatsoever," said Lt. Buis.
Police are returning the stolen items to the owners.
