HARLAN, Ky. (WYMT) - "Operation Justified" is named after the FX television show, but this is not entertainment. "Operation Justified" is the United States Marshals sex offender compliance check in Eastern Kentucky.
Friday, officials announced the results of a nearly three week investigation. They were making sure offenders were obeying the law.
"We're here to make sure they're doing what they're supposed to be doing and if they're not, we're going to put them in jail," said U.S. Marshal Loren Carl.
Ten agencies checked 81 sex offenders in Bell, Harlan, and Leslie Counties.
"Main thing is keeping your kids safe. Main thing is making sure they're in a safe environment. Make sure they're not exposed to some of these child predators and sex offenders," said Mike Thomas, Harlan City Police Chief.
Officers arrested four people for not complying with the law. They arrested seven others on unrelated bench warrants.
They are still searching for four other sex offenders and say when found, they could also face charges.
"It's not only your duty as Marshal Carl said, it's your moral obligation to take care of these kids and protect these kids," said Marvin Lipfird, Harlan County Sheriff.
The Marshals say 35 of the 81 offenders were convicted in another state but moved to Kentucky.
"They move to rural Kentucky thinking well, we're going to hide," said Marshal Carl.
While operation justified is wrapping up, the U. S. Marshals say they are already planning the next sex offender check.
"We'll be back, kind of like Arnold Schwarzenegger on this, I'll be back. I'm not going tell them when we'll be back, but we'll be back," said Marshal Carl.
